They see the camping plans, the future trips, the family moments, the stories waiting to happen. And we see all of that too. We feel it. We’re living it in real time. But behind all the excitement, there’s something we’ve been thinking about a lot lately. We don’t just want to build a van. We want to build a life that’s worth remembering. There are certain moments when a dream stops feeling like an idea and starts feeling like real life. Today was one of those moments. We pulled into a Shell station here in Alabama, eased the van up to the diesel pump, and started fueling. It felt like any normal stop at first. Just another errand. Just another fill-up. But then the numbers started climbing on the screen, and it had a way of getting your attention fast. The price sitting there on the pump was $4.99 a gallon for diesel. Not four dollars and something. Not “well, it’s high, but manageable.” Four ninety-nine. And as the gallons rolled upward and the total kept climbing past fifty dollars for just over ten gallons, it hit me— This is real now. Because that’s the thing about starting a journey like this. It’s easy to get caught up in the exciting parts. The family trips. The open road. The van build. The stories. The freedom. Those are the parts we imagine. But then there are these moments. The ordinary, practical, very real...

  For two years, this was just an idea. A late-night scroll on Facebook Marketplace. A saved listing. A “maybe someday.” We looked at dozens of vans. Missed deals. Second-guessed decisions. Wondered if we were crazy for even trying to make this happen with a family of seven. But deep down, we knew what we were chasing wasn’t just a vehicle. We were chasing something bigger. The Search For nearly two years, I searched. Every chance I got. Facebook Marketplace became part of the routine. Auctions. Listings. Leads that went nowhere. Vans that were almost right—but not quite. At one point, I sold my dream vehicle—a 2005 Ford Excursion with a Cummins swap pushing around 700 horsepower—to help make this possible.  I sold it to Project Unify Disaster Relief which meant it was needed and going to help make an impact in others lives.
