Sampson Expedition: Building the Journey Without Losing What Matters Most

Image
There’s a lot of excitement around Sampson Expedition right now. The van. The plans. The gear. The build ideas. The roads we want to travel. The memories we want to make as a family. And honestly, it’s easy to get swept up in all of that. When you start a family adventure channel, people see the fun parts first. They see the dream. They see the vehicle. They see the camping plans, the future trips, the family moments, the stories waiting to happen. And we see all of that too. We feel it. We’re living it in real time. But behind all the excitement, there’s something we’ve been thinking about a lot lately. We don’t just want to build a van. We want to build a life that’s worth remembering. That may sound dramatic, but it’s true. Sampson Expedition was never meant to be just about a vehicle. It was never just about overlanding, road trips, or upgrades. It was always about something deeper. It’s about faith, family, adventure, and choosing a different pace in a world tha...

$4.99 a Gallon in Alabama… and the Journey Suddenly Felt Very Real

Image
There are certain moments when a dream stops feeling like an idea and starts feeling like real life. Today was one of those moments. We pulled into a Shell station here in Alabama, eased the van up to the diesel pump, and started fueling. It felt like any normal stop at first. Just another errand. Just another fill-up. But then the numbers started climbing on the screen, and it had a way of getting your attention fast. The price sitting there on the pump was $4.99 a gallon for diesel. Not four dollars and something. Not “well, it’s high, but manageable.” Four ninety-nine. And as the gallons rolled upward and the total kept climbing past fifty dollars for just over ten gallons, it hit me— This is real now. Because that’s the thing about starting a journey like this. It’s easy to get caught up in the exciting parts. The family trips. The open road. The van build. The stories. The freedom. Those are the parts we imagine. But then there are these moments. The ordinary, practical, very real...

We Waited 2 Years for This Van… And It Was Worth It

Image
For two years, this was just an idea. A late-night scroll on Facebook Marketplace. A saved listing. A “maybe someday.” We looked at dozens of vans. Missed deals. Second-guessed decisions. Wondered if we were crazy for even trying to make this happen with a family of seven. But deep down, we knew what we were chasing wasn’t just a vehicle. We were chasing something bigger. The Search For nearly two years, I searched. Every chance I got. Facebook Marketplace became part of the routine. Auctions. Listings. Leads that went nowhere. Vans that were almost right—but not quite. At one point, I sold my dream vehicle—a 2005 Ford Excursion with a Cummins swap pushing around 700 horsepower—to help make this possible.  I sold it to Project Unify Disaster Relief which meant it was needed and going to help make an impact in others lives. That wasn’t an easy decision. But sometimes you don’t trade up—you trade forward . Then This Van Showed Up When this 2008 Freightliner Sprinter appeared, ...

The Journey Is Getting Real: First Video Edits, Big Sacrifices, and What’s Coming Next

Image
There’s a big difference between talking about something and actually watching it begin to take shape. That’s where we are right now with Sampson Expedition . For a long time, this was an idea. A dream. A vision for something bigger than just a van build or a YouTube channel. It was a picture in our minds of family adventure, faith, road trips, hard work, and building something meaningful together. Now it’s getting real. We’re editing our first episode , and once that starts happening, everything changes. What was once just an idea begins turning into a story you can actually see. And honestly, that has brought a whole new level of excitement into our home. This Didn’t Happen Overnight What people see now is the beginning of the journey. What they don’t always see is how long it took to get here. I shopped for two years on Facebook Marketplace looking for the right van. Two years. Watching listings, comparing options, waiting, hoping, missing out on some, passing on others, tryin...

Welcome to Sampson Expedition: Built for the Journey

Image
There comes a point when you realize life is moving fast, your kids are growing up faster, and if you’re not careful, you can spend all your time working, planning, and surviving… without ever really living the story you want to tell. That’s part of why Sampson Expedition exists. This isn’t just a van build. It isn’t just a travel blog. And it definitely isn’t about trying to look cool on the internet. This is about family, adventure, hard work, faith, and making memories on purpose . We’re the Sampsons, a family of seven learning how to build something meaningful together—one road, one project, one lesson, and one mile at a time. Why We Started Like a lot of families, we’ve felt the pull of busy schedules, responsibilities, deadlines, and all the noise that comes with modern life. Work matters. Ministry matters. Providing matters. But so does being present. So instead of waiting for the “perfect time,” we decided to start now. We’re building out our van, creating cont...
