Sampson Expedition: Built for the Journey

We didn’t start this because it was trendy.

We started this because life got loud… and time got short.

For years, our life has looked like a lot of yours—busy, full, meaningful… but also stuck in a cycle. Ministry. Work. Raising kids. Paying bills. Repeat.

A good life—but not always a free one.

Our Story

I was adopted when I was just two days old and raised as a preacher’s kid on a family farm in Nebraska. Faith, hard work, and family were always at the center of everything.

And for most of my life, I’ve lived in ministry—pouring into others, helping tell their stories, encouraging them to step into what God has called them to do.

But somewhere along the way, I realized something…

I had spent most of my life behind the camera, helping other people live their calling—
while slowly drifting into routine myself.

The Wake-Up Call

Over the years, life has a way of getting your attention.

  • Health struggles
  • A serious car accident
  • Almost losing my life during COVID
  • Learning that my grandfather passed away at just 52
  • Watching our kids grow up faster than we ever imagined

I’m 45.

And that realization hit hard:

Time isn’t guaranteed.

Why We’re Doing This

We don’t want to look up one day and realize we waited too long.

We don’t want to miss the years that matter most.

We don’t want to just survive life—we want to live it.

So we made a decision:

We’re building a van.
We’re simplifying.
We’re stepping out.
And we’re going to see God’s creation together as a family.

What is Sampson Expedition?

This is more than a van build.

This is our attempt to break out of the cycle.

It’s about:

  • Family adventures
  • Faith on the road
  • Building something from nothing
  • Learning as we go (and messing up along the way)
  • Finding joy in the simple things again

We’re a family of 7 (plus Ruby, our boxer), figuring this out one step at a time.

  There comes a point when you realize life is moving fast, your kids are growing up faster, and if you’re not careful, you can spend all your time working, planning, and surviving… without ever really living the story you want to tell. This is about family, adventure, hard work, faith, and making memories on purpose . What Should We Name the Van? (These Were Our Family’s Best… and Worst Ideas)

  We knew buying a van would come with a lot of decisions—layout, build, budget, all the things you expect when you step into something like this. What we didn’t expect was how hard it would be to name it. At some point, it hit us… this thing needs a name. Not just something random, but something that actually fits what it is and what we’re going to do with it. So instead of overthinking it on our own, we went around the family and started asking for ideas. That’s when things got interesting. Zeke kicked things off with “Big Ben,” which honestly isn’t bad. It feels solid. But then he followed it up with “Big Sassy Sally,” and that’s where we started realizing this might not go the direction we expected. Luke had two completely different approaches. One was “Gerald,” which feels like the name of a quiet guy down the street. The other was “The Beast,” which feels like it could climb a mountain or break something important.
