What Should We Name the Van? (These Were Our Family’s Best… and Worst Ideas)

Image
We knew buying a van would come with a lot of decisions—layout, build, budget, all the things you expect when you step into something like this. What we didn’t expect was how hard it would be to name it. At some point, it hit us… this thing needs a name. Not just something random, but something that actually fits what it is and what we’re going to do with it. So instead of overthinking it on our own, we went around the family and started asking for ideas. That’s when things got interesting. Zeke kicked things off with “Big Ben,” which honestly isn’t bad. It feels solid. But then he followed it up with “Big Sassy Sally,” and that’s where we started realizing this might not go the direction we expected. Luke had two completely different approaches. One was “Gerald,” which feels like the name of a quiet guy down the street. The other was “The Beast,” which feels like it could climb a mountain or break something important. Not exactly the same vibe. Ruby didn’t have a lot to say, but...

Trying to Build a Van That Actually Fits Our Family

Trying to Build a Van That Actually Fits Our Family:  The 5 biggest decisions shaping this build right now A lot of van builds start with cool ideas. Ours started with a real life that was already full. That is part of what makes this build exciting, but it is also what makes it complicated. Because we are not building a van in a vacuum. We are building it in the middle of work, ministry, family schedules, baseball, responsibilities, limited time, limited space, limited money, and a whole lot of opinions. And the truth is, that may be the most honest part of this whole process. A van build is not just wood, wiring, layout plans, and gear. It is a long line of decisions. Some are fun. Some are expensive. Some feel small until you realize they affect everything else. And some are not really about the van at all. They are about the kind of life you are trying to create and whether the people you love are actually going to enjoy it once all the hype wears off. That is where we ...

I Was Waiting to Be Ready… That Was the Problem

Image
I almost didn’t start this. Not the van build. Not the YouTube channel. Not even this blog. Not because I didn’t want to… But because I kept telling myself: “I’ll start when I’m ready.” The Lie I Bought Into For two years, I was waiting on the van. That part at least made sense. But if I’m being honest, I was waiting on more than that. I was waiting to: Lose weight Look better on camera Feel more confident Have everything figured out Be the “best version” of myself Because in my mind, that’s when it would really work. That’s when it would be worth putting out there. Here’s the Truth Nobody Wants to Say Out Loud That version of you? The “ready” version? It doesn’t exist. At least not in the way you think. Because the standard keeps moving. You lose some weight? Now you want more. You get more confident? Now you want better gear. You improve your setup? Now you want better content. There’s always another reason to wait. And if you’re not careful, you’ll spend years preparing for a versio...

When Life Already Feels Full

Image
Life isn’t just busy right now… it’s stacked. That's why we haven't posted the second video. Every day feels like it’s spoken for before it even starts. Between working at Heritage, preaching at Oakland, serving at Woodlawn, running the Ministry League Podcast Network, editing videos for a guy, managing social media—and then trying to be fully present for two boys in baseball and a daughter finishing her senior year… It’s not just a schedule. It’s a sprint that never really stops. And here’s the part that hits me hardest: None of it is bad. In fact, it’s all good. It’s meaningful. It matters. But that’s exactly what makes it dangerous. When Good Things Crowd Out Life I’ve realized something lately that’s been sitting heavy on me: You can build a life full of meaningful work… and still miss your life. That’s a tough sentence to swallow. Because from the outside, it looks like everything is clicking: Ministry is happening Content is growing Opportunities are expanding The calenda...

Sampson Expedition: Building the Journey Without Losing What Matters Most

Image
There’s a lot of excitement around Sampson Expedition right now. The van. The plans. The gear. The build ideas. The roads we want to travel. The memories we want to make as a family. And honestly, it’s easy to get swept up in all of that. When you start a family adventure channel, people see the fun parts first. They see the dream. They see the vehicle. They see the camping plans, the future trips, the family moments, the stories waiting to happen. And we see all of that too. We feel it. We’re living it in real time. But behind all the excitement, there’s something we’ve been thinking about a lot lately. We don’t just want to build a van. We want to build a life that’s worth remembering. That may sound dramatic, but it’s true. Sampson Expedition was never meant to be just about a vehicle. It was never just about overlanding, road trips, or upgrades. It was always about something deeper. It’s about faith, family, adventure, and choosing a different pace in a world tha...

$4.99 a Gallon in Alabama… and the Journey Suddenly Felt Very Real

Image
There are certain moments when a dream stops feeling like an idea and starts feeling like real life. Today was one of those moments. We pulled into a Shell station here in Alabama, eased the van up to the diesel pump, and started fueling. It felt like any normal stop at first. Just another errand. Just another fill-up. But then the numbers started climbing on the screen, and it had a way of getting your attention fast. The price sitting there on the pump was $4.99 a gallon for diesel. Not four dollars and something. Not “well, it’s high, but manageable.” Four ninety-nine. And as the gallons rolled upward and the total kept climbing past fifty dollars for just over ten gallons, it hit me— This is real now. Because that’s the thing about starting a journey like this. It’s easy to get caught up in the exciting parts. The family trips. The open road. The van build. The stories. The freedom. Those are the parts we imagine. But then there are these moments. The ordinary, practical, very real...

We Waited 2 Years for This Van… And It Was Worth It

Image
For two years, this was just an idea. A late-night scroll on Facebook Marketplace. A saved listing. A “maybe someday.” We looked at dozens of vans. Missed deals. Second-guessed decisions. Wondered if we were crazy for even trying to make this happen with a family of seven. But deep down, we knew what we were chasing wasn’t just a vehicle. We were chasing something bigger. The Search For nearly two years, I searched. Every chance I got. Facebook Marketplace became part of the routine. Auctions. Listings. Leads that went nowhere. Vans that were almost right—but not quite. At one point, I sold my dream vehicle—a 2005 Ford Excursion with a Cummins swap pushing around 700 horsepower—to help make this possible.  I sold it to Project Unify Disaster Relief which meant it was needed and going to help make an impact in others lives. That wasn’t an easy decision. But sometimes you don’t trade up—you trade forward . Then This Van Showed Up When this 2008 Freightliner Sprinter appeared, ...
