$4.99 a Gallon in Alabama… and the Journey Suddenly Felt Very Real

There are certain moments when a dream stops feeling like an idea and starts feeling like real life.
Today was one of those moments.
We pulled into a Shell station here in Alabama, eased the van up to the diesel pump, and started fueling. It felt like any normal stop at first. Just another errand. Just another fill-up. But then the numbers started climbing on the screen, and it had a way of getting your attention fast.
The price sitting there on the pump was $4.99 a gallon for diesel.
Not four dollars and something. Not “well, it’s high, but manageable.”
Four ninety-nine.

And as the gallons rolled upward and the total kept climbing past fifty dollars for just over ten gallons, it hit me—
This is real now.
Because that’s the thing about starting a journey like this. It’s easy to get caught up in the exciting parts. The family trips. The open road. The van build. The stories. The freedom. Those are the parts we imagine.
But then there are these moments.
The ordinary, practical, very real moments.
Standing at a diesel pump in Alabama, with the hum of the machine running and that bright yellow panel staring back at you, reminds you quickly that this isn’t just a dream—it’s something you’re stepping into.
And it has a cost.
But here’s the thing…
That doesn’t make me want this less.
If anything, it makes it feel more honest.
We’re not chasing some polished version of van life where everything is easy and cheap and picture-perfect. That’s not real life, and it’s not our life. We’re a family building something together—something meaningful—and part of that means embracing the real side of the journey too.
The costs. The decisions. The moments that make you pause and think.
And today definitely made me think.
It Changes How You Look at the Road
Standing there watching that number climb, you start thinking differently.
You start realizing that every mile matters a little more. That random driving just to drive doesn’t make as much sense. That planning, being intentional, and making each trip count suddenly becomes important.
Maybe that’s not a bad thing.
Maybe there’s something good about a journey that asks you to slow down and think. Something good about counting the cost and choosing to move forward anyway.
Because the truth is, there’s a cost either way.
Yes, diesel is expensive.
But so is wasting time.
So is putting off things you know matter.
So is always waiting for the “right time” that never seems to come.
Later has a way of slipping away.
So yes, today the pump reminded us that the road comes with a price tag.
But it also reminded me why we’re doing this.
We’re building something bigger than just a van.
We’re building memories.
We’re building time together.
We’re building a story our kids will carry with them.
And real things cost something.
Learning to Be Smarter About It
That moment at the pump didn’t stop us—but it did make us think about how we can be smarter moving forward.
We’re still learning, but here are a few simple things we’re already trying to do:
We’re slowing down a little. Driving 65 instead of pushing 75 or 80 may not feel as exciting, but it makes a difference over time. A few extra minutes on the road can mean real savings at the pump.
We’re trying to drive smoother. Not jumping on the gas, not braking hard, just being more intentional with how we move. It’s simple, but it adds up.
We’re planning trips better. Instead of just “heading out,” we’re thinking ahead—combining stops, avoiding backtracking, and making sure the miles we drive actually matter.
We’re also paying attention to weight. When you’re building out a van, it’s easy to just keep adding things. But every extra item has a cost. So we’re starting to think more about what we really need versus what just feels nice to have.
Even small things like tire pressure matter. It’s easy to overlook, but it affects fuel efficiency more than people realize.
And on longer stretches, using cruise control when it makes sense helps keep things steady and avoids unnecessary fuel burn.
None of this is groundbreaking. It’s just being intentional.
But that’s really what this whole journey is about anyway.
What Are You Seeing Where You Are?
So now I’m curious.
We paid $4.99 a gallon for diesel in Alabama today.
What are you seeing where you are?
Is it higher? Lower? About the same?
Has it changed how you travel, plan trips, or think about getting on the road?
I’d love to hear what it looks like across the country.
Still Moving Forward
This journey was never going to be perfect.
There are going to be moments like today—real-world reminders that this isn’t just an idea anymore. It’s something we’re stepping into.
But that doesn’t change why we started.
We’re building something intentional.
We’re building something real.
We’re building something together.
And yes… we’re going to have to fuel it.
Today it cost $4.99 a gallon.
And today it reminded us—
this journey is real.
