We Waited 2 Years for This Van… And It Was Worth It

For two years, this was just an idea.

A late-night scroll on Facebook Marketplace.
A saved listing.
A “maybe someday.”

We looked at dozens of vans. Missed deals. Second-guessed decisions. Wondered if we were crazy for even trying to make this happen with a family of seven.

But deep down, we knew what we were chasing wasn’t just a vehicle.

We were chasing something bigger.

The Search

For nearly two years, I searched. Every chance I got.

Facebook Marketplace became part of the routine. Auctions. Listings. Leads that went nowhere. Vans that were almost right—but not quite.

At one point, I sold my dream vehicle—a 2005 Ford Excursion with a Cummins swap pushing around 700 horsepower—to help make this possible.  I sold it to Project Unify Disaster Relief which meant it was needed and going to help make an impact in others lives.

That wasn’t an easy decision.

But sometimes you don’t trade up—you trade forward.

Then This Van Showed Up

When this 2008 Freightliner Sprinter appeared, something felt different.

Not just because of the price.
Not just because of the specs.

Because of the story behind it.

This van had already lived a life. It had served a purpose. And now it was sitting there, ready for a new chapter.  The previous owners used the van to transport their disabled son (paralyzed in a car accident) across the country visiting state and national parks.  He passed away recently and they could not bear to see the van in their driveway anymore.  They entrusted us with it and sold it to us for a really good deal.  Now its our turn to make memories with it.

And for some reason… that mattered.

It made this feel less like a purchase and more like a continuation.

A Blank Canvas

Right now, it’s just a van.

No build. No fancy setup. No perfect layout.

But that’s exactly what makes it exciting.

This is a blank canvas for:

  • family road trips

  • late-night conversations

  • unexpected detours

  • mistakes we’ll laugh about later

  • and memories we haven’t even imagined yet

The best part? We get to build it together.

The Kids Already See It

Zeke and Luke don’t see a cargo van.

They see:

  • bunk beds

  • a kitchen

  • a gaming setup

  • and somehow… a hot tub (we’ll see about that one 😄)

That’s the beauty of this stage.

Before it becomes anything… it can be anything.

What Sampson Expedition Is (And Isn’t)

Let’s be clear about something.

This isn’t going to be a perfect van life channel.

You’re not going to see a fully finished build overnight.
You’re not going to see polished, unrealistic setups.

This is going to be:

  • real

  • sometimes messy

  • sometimes slow

  • sometimes frustrating

But always honest.

Because this isn’t about building the perfect van.

It’s about building a life worth remembering.

What Comes Next

Now the real work begins.

Cleaning it out.
Planning the build.
Figuring things out as we go.
Making mistakes. Fixing them. Learning.

And slowly turning this van into something that fits our family.
